Genetic testing is required when:
- The expectant mother will be 35 years of age or older at the time of childbirth;
- Expectant dad over 42 years of age;
- The parents are relatives;
- Previous pregnancies have failed (there were two or more miscarriages or non-developing pregnancies, stillbirth, or a newborn with congenital anomalies);
- One of the parents is a carrier of a chromosomal abnormality, i. it has a certain chromosomal structural feature called balanced chromosome translocation;
- The expectant mother became infected with an infectious disease (rubella, toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus infection) during pregnancy, was affected by chemical or physical factors (X-rays, temperature), took medication, alcohol, drugs;
- Fetal or pregnancy pathology is suspected or identified during pregnancy;
- Indications for genetic counseling could include endless anxiety for the expectant mother, which may seem unfounded. There have been cases where later genetic testing found a pathology in a child.
